Here's something that you don't know. We sat down with Jasmine, J. Marie, Jake and Daven of Oh Darling the other day, and this is what they had to say.
LiveMusicPDX: So do you wanna talk about the new record Jasmine: Sure, yeah Daven: Yeah new record, it's called Nice Nice Jasmine: It's really good, can I say that LiveMusicPDX: Yeah I think we can put that in Jasmine: I mean we like it, I mean it's ooookay LiveMusicPDX: Yeah it always sucks when a band's like, yah know don't listen to the record Jake: We're better live! Jasmine: No, we're really excited about it, we did it with our friend Greg Williams, and yeah September the 15th it's coming out
LiveMusicPDX: Are there any tracks you guys are really excited about Daven: Blindspot's my favorite on the record Jake: Yeah that's a good one Jasmine: I like that one Jake: Shoulda Never! Jasmine: I have a feeling the first single isn't gonna be any of those. It'll probably be Waking up on a Train. Our first effort, or whatever it's called, we worked hard on it LiveMusicPDX: How long did you work on the album J. Marie: I think only about six months, we did it kinda in chunks. It would have been much shorter than that but we kinda split it up Daven: Yeah we'd write four or five songs and then record them, write a couple more and record them. It was kinda fun, cuz it's not like we had these ten songs that we played for two years. A lot of them are still new songs LiveMusicPDX: Now you(talking to Davey) play bass, but got relegated to guitar for this band Jasmine: Not relegated, not relegated Daven: Yeah they told me, you can be in the band but you have to learn to play guitar (everyone laughs)
J. Marie: We're not kidding, we're not kidding at all Daven: So being the smart guy that am, I learned to play guitar Jasmine: And you know what, it is quite possibly the greatest thing that could have happened to us, because he plays a really unique style of guitar J. Marie: Guitar-Bass lets call it Jasmine: Guitar-bass, and it helped really cultivate our sound, which I think is a really positive thing about our music. I think we sound unique, and she(motioning to J. Marie) is a phenomenal bass player, and he's a great musician Daven: It's been fun!
LiveMusicPDX: What are you guys really looking for Jasmine: I'm just so excited to be part of this band LiveMusicPDX: But you guys(motioning to Jasmine and J. Marie) started it, it's not like they can kick you out Daven: We're actually looking for a replacement for her right now LiveMusicPDX: Did I mention I can sing J. Marie: Can we dress you up LiveMusicPDX: I'm not adverse to wearing a dress Jasmine: I can hear you guys, cuz I'm right hear, I'm right hear Jake: No, she's irreplaceable Jasmine: You're a jerk(she says with a pouty sarcastic smile) I just wanted to say, this is the best thing I've ever been a part of. I'm really excited about our future and J. Marie: It's exciting Jasmine: It is, because it feels like the world is our oyster, like we have this cool thing going on, and we love each other. Which I don't know if you've read a lot of articles about bands, but most bands kinda hate each other, or they end up hating each other, or there's drama somewhere, and that's just never gonna happen here, and it's just a blessing and it's amazing. It's just so much fun, and it makes it easy.
Apparently it also makes for some really good music! As I got to witness along with a no room to move crowd, over at the Doug Fir, as they came on stage with bright lights, red and purple tights, and two guys in black, who are they again? They opened with Electrocute which is a fun upbeat and quirky pop tune. I guess that's kinda their sound though, it's fun music, music that would be great for road trips to the coast, crisp and clean like a salted breeze coming off the ocean. Back when they first started doing shows, they'd get comments like, 'that was…interesting', after seeing them play and the reaction from the crowd, I think they're going to get a lot more like, 'Wow!'.
They gave us a…"nice" introduction to the new album, Nice Nice, which comes out on the 15th of September. Against the Skyline, really struck a chord with the crowd, it has an almost cyclical effect on you, like you're spinning about. People moving in packed little spaces, with that, ' I can't believe it, this is really good' expression on their faces. It's the same feeling I had when I bit into my first bacon maple bar, or the first time I saw The Princess Bride. Rolling through their arsenal of pop and taking aim at the audience, as the guy behind me said, "That's baby makin' music, right there". Waking up on a Train, definitely my favorite song of the evening, some songs just have the ability to get in your head, and once they're there, you don't want them to leave. The music just grabs you and you find yourself singing along and you don't even know the words.
What can I say about this band, good people, good times, and go see them! They'll be at noon tunes, Tuesday the 26, at Pioneer Square, and Musicfest Northwest on the 6th of September, so get off your ass and hustle down, you'll thank me later. Oh, and if anyone wants to get married they're drummer is licensed! And Oh Darling, just remember my voice is for hire and I'm trying on a new dress as we speak…wink, wink, I heart you <3
