We went down to the Ash Street Saloon, to catch the last Portland show, of the year, for Wooden Nickle. It was the album release party, and the album is, A Kick in Falling Away. The album incorporates many different sounds and styles, from very experimental to straight up rock and roll. The second track on the album, "Garden", is one of my favorites; a very simple piano melody and an array of background sounds that give it a light but haunting feeling. This feeling rolls nicely into the intro of "Vintage", which is probably the most radio friendly song on the album. Just like the title implies it has a vintage feeling to it, like dust on a record player belting out a Beatles song on a sunny autumn day after the rain, there's a cool familiar breeze to it.
I've been listening to this album, for the last few weeks now, and I'm always intrigued by something new about it. The thing about an album like this is that you can put it down for awhile, pick it back up and find new and interesting aspects to it. The song "Fight to Find a Way" was like that for me, the more I listened to it, and the more I started to like it. Like the last song, "Patience", take a little with this album, it'll take a bit of time to sink in, but it's worth it in the end. All in all the album makes me want to listen to it more and more, it's not something that you're going to love one track and throw away in a month. It's something that you need to slap a pair of oversized headphones on with, and walk around the city until you run out of batteries.
